German-born painter and photographer Charles Christian Nahl arrived in California in 1851 to join the Gold Rush and staked a claim in Rough & Ready. In 1852 he moved to San Francisco, where he would establish a long-running art and photograph studio with his brother Arthur. In the mid-1860s the Nahl brothers were joined by William Dickman to form the short-lived Nahl Brothers & Dickman partnership. (cf. Palmquist, Pioneer Photographers of the Far West, p. 415-417.)
